Back story: When Kate was young her parents often told stories passed down from her grandparents recounting life before the plague. As a child Kate found the stories glamorous and beautiful but it didn't take long for her childhood wonderment toward the pre-apocalyptic world to fade with the current hardships surrounding her.
Growing up in Hart's Mill was a somewhat comfortable for most of her childhood. Kate never knew her grandmother and nobody ever talked about what happened to her. When Kate's grandfather fell ill Kate's father and grandfather went to go see a doctor but never returned. Kate was seven. Kate and her mom scavenged and worked together to raise Kate's younger brother and sister. Without her father's rifle to protect them Kate and her mom were very careful to keep a low profile and to travel unseen through the rubble and wasteland. The town helped with keeping them safe for a time until the raider attack of 2099.
With their home on the edge of the settlement they were hit before the alarm could be raised in the middle of the night. She remembers awaking to a rough kick to the head and being tied up and dragged out of her home. At the camp the raiders feasted on the spoils of their raid while the grotesque depravity was burned into the minds of the others captured from Heart's Mill. Then began the flesh peeling and amputations. The raiders seemed to like having pieces of flesh to wear like trophies. Kate watched in horror as her mother was cut up and bled dry in the firelight before her. While everybody slept Kate cried upon the ground. The dust and dirt digging painfully into her own wounds in the fading firelight and at that moment she figured her way out. Using a hot coal kicked out of the dying fire and a steady breath she was able to burn through the dry rope around her wrists with only a few burns of her own. After untying her feet she snuck through the passed out raiders and lifted a knife from one of them. The most perfect and sharp knife. The greatest knife ever created. She returned to the five raiders who tortured and killed her mother and slit all of their throats silently. Their soft gurgles were drown out by the snores of the others. Kate silently left the camp and made her way back to Heart's Mill while the adrenaline kept her upright still clutching the knife close to her chest.
Her sister and brother were gone, her mother was dead. Her wounds still itched with the dust of the road and seeped blood. Her life was dull and meaningless. There was still chaos and smoldering in Hart's Mill but it was muffled by her loss.
After the attack she moved in with her childhood friend Jane, who's parents had died the previous year. Jane always had been protective of Kate and was even more protective after Kate returned from her kidnapping a broken person. They stayed in Hart's Mill for a long time until Kate could no longer stand the place and the horrible memories and sadness it contained. They then began wandering the world looking for new lives.
Kate now has an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and sometimes fragmented thoughts. She tries hard to hide her problems especially from her best friend Jane who worries a lot about her. Kate's compulsion is that she starts tapping the back of her left hand and counting in her head usually to keep memories away or to keep her fear in check. She's very self-conscious about appearing crazy to others and it took a long time for her to subdue her compulsions to such a muted state.
Kate is a very intelligent woman but there are certain aspects of schooling that she didn't care about at all because she felt they were useless. She likes to write in her notebook to keep her language skills up but history became a subject she stopped caring about after her father and grandfather disappeared and the glamorous stories of the past disappeared with them.
